On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, let us take a moment to reflect on the importance of caring for the elderly and the impact it has on our own lives. Reverend Father Andrew Campbell, who shared his wisdom at the 1st Ghana Ageing Conference in Accra, spoke about our duties towards our parents, drawing from a powerful Bible quotation, Sirach 3: 1-33.

This passage reminds us of the significance of honoring our fathers and respecting our mothers. It stresses that by showing reverence to our parents, we not only atone for our sins but also lay up treasure for ourselves. The Lord, according to Sirach, honors fathers above their children and upholds a mother’s rights over her children.

By honoring our parents, particularly in their old age, we not only receive their blessings but also strengthen the bonds between us and our own children. The passage urges us to support our fathers and be patient with them, even if their minds may fail due to the passage of time. The kindness shown to a father, even in his old age, will be remembered and credited to us, bringing us comfort and solace in our own times of distress.

Former President Mahama, who also attended the conference, highlighted the importance of these teachings, emphasizing the need to care for our parents and not to belittle them. He reminded us that the glory of our fathers is our own glory, and it is a disgrace for children not to respect their mothers.

As we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons, it is essential for us to remember the wisdom imparted by Reverend Father Campbell and Former President Mahama. Investing in the care and respect of our elderly parents is not only a moral duty but also an investment in our own future. Let us cherish their presence, honor their contributions, and ensure that they receive the love and care they deserve.
