March 26, 2026 – In a major crackdown on illegal drug activities, the Special Operations team of the Ghana Police Service, under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has arrested 19 individuals in the Ashanti Region on charges of drug peddling.
The operation, which was carried out across several districts within the region, was part of ongoing efforts by the IGP to curb the rising drug trade that has plagued various communities. The arrested suspects, according to police sources, are believed to be involved in the distribution and sale of illicit substances, including marijuana and other narcotics.
The IGP’s Special Operations team, which has been intensifying its surveillance and intelligence gathering efforts, acted swiftly following a series of raids on known drug hotspots within Ashanti. The authorities say they have seized significant quantities of illegal drugs, including bags of marijuana and various types of prescription drugs, which were being sold on the black market.
Speaking at a press briefing following the operation, IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare commended the Special Operations team for their dedication and effective coordination in dealing with the drug menace. He emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling organized crime and protecting the youth from the dangers of drug abuse.
“Drug peddling and abuse have a direct impact on the safety and security of our communities, particularly the youth. We are committed to dismantling these illegal drug networks and ensuring that the perpetrators face the full force of the law,” IGP Dampare said.
He also announced that investigations into the operation were ongoing, and the suspects would be processed and charged in accordance with the law. Authorities have also assured the public that more operations are planned to continue addressing this growing concern.
Residents of the Ashanti Region have expressed mixed reactions to the arrests, with many praising the police for their efforts to rid the area of illegal drugs. However, some community leaders have called for more support in the form of rehabilitation programs for those affected by drug addiction.
“This is a step in the right direction, but we also need to focus on prevention and rehabilitation,” said a community leader in Kumasi. “Many young people get caught up in the drug trade due to lack of opportunities. We need to offer them better alternatives.”
The crackdown is part of a broader strategy to combat the surge in drug trafficking, which has become a significant issue in several parts of Ghana. Authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.
