Asamoah Gyan, the former captain of the Black Stars, revealed that his transfer from Al Ain in the UAE to the Chinese Super League was a decision made collectively with input from family and friends.
Gyan, who moved to Shanghai SIPG in July 2015 on a two-year contract worth £227,000 per week, admitted that the move to China was not an easy choice during an interview with Wontumi Radio. “It was a tough decision for me, but after consulting with everyone around me, we concluded it was the best move,” Gyan said.
Reflecting on the outcome, Gyan mentioned, “Fortunately, it turned out positively for me, and we’ve been able to establish businesses that employ Ghanaians.”
Gyan initially joined Al Ain from Sunderland in the English Premier League, a move that raised eyebrows despite his success in the competitive league.
Throughout his remarkable career, Gyan played for clubs such as Liberty Professionals, Stade Rennes, Udinese, Sunderland, Kayserispor, North East United, and Legon Cities. He announced his retirement from professional football in June 2023.
Gyan holds the title as Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals and remains Africa’s highest goal scorer in the history of the World Cup.
