Former Ghanaian President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed his opposition to LGBTQI+. Emphasizing his stance as a member of the Assemblies of God Church, he highlighted that his faith is fundamentally against such practices.
Citing the teachings of his faith, Mahama remarked, “My faith is against LGBTQ+. I am a member of the Assemblies of God. The faith I adhere to does not endorse same-sex marriages. The parliamentary bill addressing this issue has not been enacted yet, but the government has signaled that if it is passed, the president will not support it.”
Mahama explained that the Attorney General has indicated that a private member’s motion could pass, but it should not become the government’s responsibility. He added, “The president, based on that technicality, will not sign the bill into law. A collaborative effort between Parliament and the Executive is required to review and potentially remove any bills from the government so that the President may consider signing them.”
Expressing his personal views, Mahama stated, “I believe a man is a man, and a woman is a woman. You can’t simply wake up one morning and declare that you identify as a woman when you are not biologically female. Therefore, if you ask me, my personal faith is against it.”
