Dr. Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari, a Geological Engineer and expert in Sustainable Water Resources Management at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), has raised serious concerns about the health risks associated with the consumption of poorly labeled filtered drinking water, commonly known as “pure water,” and water sourced from polluted origins.

Dr. Sunkari emphasized that many brands of ‘pure water’ lack clear labeling regarding expiration dates, potentially endangering consumers who may unknowingly drink expired water. He pointed out that the standard “Best Before Three Months” label fails to inform consumers adequately about the freshness and safety of the water they consume.

During an interview on Info Radio, Dr. Sunkari referenced a report by the Ghana Statistical Service indicating that some ‘pure water’ samples tested positive for human feces contamination. This contamination, he explained, often originates from boreholes located in residential areas, where water is used for various household purposes before being used in sachet water production.

Regarding the storage of water, Dr. Sunkari highlighted that improper storage practices among pure water producers further exacerbate health risks for consumers. He urged producers to adhere strictly to regulatory guidelines for water storage to ensure the safety and quality of their products.

In conclusion, Dr. Sunkari stressed the importance of transparent and informative labeling on sachets of drinking water, as well as the necessity for stringent adherence to water quality standards throughout the production and distribution processes. These measures, he argued, are crucial in safeguarding public health from the dangers posed by contaminated and improperly stored drinking water.
