The government has set an ambitious target to plant 10 million trees this year as part of its Green Ghana Project.

This represents an increase from the 7 million trees planted in the maiden edition of the project and a reduction from last year’s target of 20 million.

Launching the project, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, explained that the government is committed to restoring the country’s degraded landscape and improving the environment.

He noted that while external factors such as rainfall patterns and wildfires had affected the survival rate of trees planted in previous years, the government was determined to continue its efforts to plant more trees.

This year’s Green Ghana Project theme is “Our Forests, Our Health,” emphasizing the importance of trees to the environment and human well-being.

Mr. Jinapor encouraged Ghanaians to participate in the project by planting trees in their communities and supporting government efforts to achieve its tree-planting target.

In addition to the 10 million trees to be planted this year, the government has also announced plans to establish more nurseries to boost the production of seedlings for future planting. This is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable forest management and combat climate change.

The government’s ambitious tree-planting target has been welcomed by environmental groups, who see it as a positive step towards protecting Ghana’s forests and improving the environment for future generations.
