Gov’t Pays GH¢2.6 Billion to NHIS in 2025 to Settle Outstanding Debts to Health Providers” – Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

The government of Ghana has disbursed GH¢2.6 billion to settle outstanding claims and debts owed to health service providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Addressing Parliament, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh explained that this payment was aimed at clearing arrears accumulated in previous years and restoring confidence among healthcare providers.

The payment also includes GH¢1.5 billion allocated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, known as Mahama Care, to enhance healthcare delivery across the country. Akandoh emphasized that the move was part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the NHIS and ensure timely reimbursements for medical services provided to insured patients.

The minister also criticized the buildup of NHIS arrears during the previous administration, highlighting that despite GH¢5.68 billion in claims paid between 2020 and 2023, debts continued to rise. The current payments aim to address these challenges and improve the financial sustainability of the NHIS.

The National Health Insurance Scheme, which was designed to provide affordable healthcare to Ghanaians, has faced long-standing issues with delayed reimbursements to healthcare providers, which experts warn can affect the quality of medical services. The government’s recent actions are part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening the NHIS and improving healthcare access for all Ghanaians.
