Accra, April 7, 2026 — The government has received the first batch of 29-seater buses as part of its initiative to address the growing challenges in the public transport sector. This move is expected to ease the transportation burdens faced by commuters, especially in major urban areas.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport, officials confirmed that the batch of buses, which are part of a larger order, will be deployed across the country’s key routes. The buses are designed to reduce the overcrowding that has long plagued public transport systems and improve the overall travel experience for passengers.

This step is part of a broader strategy to modernize the country’s transport infrastructure and expand the fleet of government-operated vehicles. The government aims to tackle rising fares and enhance the safety and comfort of commuters, ensuring that public transport remains an accessible and reliable option for the public.

Minister of Transport, Kwaku Afriyie, who attended the ceremony marking the arrival of the buses, highlighted that the new buses are not only meant to ease congestion but also to reduce the environmental impact by offering more eco-friendly options.

“We are excited to see these buses hit the roads. This is a crucial step in the government’s commitment to improving public transport and making it more efficient for the everyday commuter. The buses will significantly reduce the number of passengers crammed into smaller, less comfortable vehicles, thus improving safety and convenience,” Afriyie said.

The arrival of the buses comes at a time when public transportation has been under increasing strain, with rising demand due to population growth and the increasing cost of living. The government has also pledged to continue investing in more buses and upgrading public transport infrastructure to meet the growing demand.

Many commuters have expressed relief and optimism about the new buses, anticipating a smoother and more comfortable ride. However, some have urged the authorities to ensure that the buses are well-maintained and that the routes are expanded to cover underserved areas.

The Ministry of Transport is expected to announce further details about the bus routes and schedules in the coming weeks, as well as plans for additional fleets in the future.
