Beatrice Annan, a member of the Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the government of being deeply involved in illegal mining activities (galamsey) and, therefore, incapable of effectively tackling the issue.

Speaking during a panel discussion on TV3’s *NewDay* morning show, which was monitored by Locotvgh.com, Lawyer Beatrice Annan stated that the government itself is the driving force behind galamsey, making its purported fight against illegal mining a mere façade.

“The truth is, the government is engaged in galamsey. You can’t expect it to fight itself. Where in the world does that happen? Why are we pretending? Why are we acting like this fight is against some unidentified individuals when, in fact, the government is the main culprit? From the presidency down to the lowest ranks in the NPP, the government is the galamsey kingpin,” she asserted.

Annan further argued that the current government never genuinely intended to fight galamsey, as it claimed. She accused the administration of deceiving the public, saying their efforts were nothing more than gaslighting. According to her, it was the media that initiated the campaign against galamsey in 2017, not the government.

“When the media began exposing the political appointees and party executives involved in galamsey, the government, in an attempt to save face, pretended to take action. This led to superficial efforts, and tragically, Major Mahama lost his life in the process,” she concluded.
