The Ghanaian Parliament has passed legislation imposing jail penalties of three to five years for those endorsing, sponsoring, or facilitating LGBTQ+ activities. The recently approved law stipulates a minimum six-month term and a maximum three-year sentence for anyone engaged in such acts.
The decision was made amidst parliamentary debates regarding amending human sexual rights and promoting Ghanaian family values.
Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, emphasized that private matters should remain private, but deliberate efforts to endorse, finance, or encourage such activities will face strict penalties.
During the clause-by-clause amendment proceedings, George elucidated, “The confusion stemmed from the advocacy for the promotion of these activities, which many Ghanaians oppose.
It is important to clarify that private matters remain private, but deliberate efforts to endorse, finance, or encourage such activities will be met with strict penalties.”
