According to a report by the Ghana Statistical Service, about 1.76 million people in Ghana were unemployed during the third quarter of 2022. The report also showed that two out of every three employed persons during the same period were in vulnerable employment, which includes self-employment without colleagues and being a contributing family worker.

The number of vulnerable employees was skewed towards females, with a 200 percentage point difference between males and females.

The report further revealed that the transition from informal employment to unemployment was more common, with an average of five times, than the movement from formal employment to unemployment.

In terms of the number of unemployed persons who were multidimensionally poor, the report showed that it remained at an average of about 615,000 across the three quarters, with a marginal increase of close to 20,000 more persons between the second and third quarters.

The Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, emphasized the need for government and stakeholders to implement policies and initiatives to address the high unemployment and underemployment challenges, particularly among young people, to promote economic growth and development.
