In his desperation to return to management, Frank Lampard wants Michael Johnson, the England coach, to work alongside him.
After receiving strong support from club consultant Graeme Souness, Lamps, 45, was on the verge of being hired by the Rangers.

Renowned coach Johnson, an advocate for Derby, is the No. 2 for England’s Under-21 team and has long been a member of the Three Lions lineup.
Lampard and Johnson were passed over for the Rangers role, which went to Philippe Clement instead.
This was in spite of Souness’s recommendation that Lampard assume leadership.
The former England player, according to the Scot, was a “outstanding candidate” who had experience with challenging assignments.
Lampard was a manager at Everton, Chelsea, and Derby County.
He was successful with the Rams, nearly winning a promotion through the playoffs in 2019.
Lampard suffered at Chelsea and Everton, but he also had to contend with a lot of outside influences.
Souness called the Toffees position a “basket case” and implied that Sean Dyche’s replacement for Lampard hasn’t made the team any better.
“Yes,” Souness responded to talkSPORT when Simon Jordan questioned if he thought Lampard was a good fit for the position.
“Philippe and Frank, two exceptional candidates, were chosen for the position.
“I didn’t have the last word. This gave Frank the advantage in my opinion.
“From a managerial standpoint, Frank has a lot to give.
“If you analyze why he took the Chelsea job at that time, I believe it was always going to be extremely, extremely difficult.”
“I consider it a disaster to accept the Everton position. Have they been better since Frank left? Not at all.
Therefore, I wouldn’t be too hard on Frank. Simon, I am aware of your criticism of him, but in my opinion, he is a true football man.
“What inspired me about Frank when I first met him was his desire to succeed as a football manager—he doesn’t need the money—and his enthusiasm for the Rangers position.
“Working in that part of Scotland’s west is not easy.” Although things went well for me, I am aware of how challenging it may be.”
