Former Black Princesses coach Robert Sackey has voiced his public support for Chris Hughton’s choice to include Andre Ayew in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Comoros and Madagascar. However, Sackey differs in opinion, suggesting that Ayew should have been brought on in the second half to capitalize on his experience and leadership, especially given his recent lack of game time after leaving Nottingham Forest players season.

Sackey’s remarks follow criticism directed at Hughton on social media for starting Ayew, considering the player’s absence from competitive games. Despite acknowledging Ayew’s limited recent play, Sackey emphasized the necessity of his inclusion due to his leadership qualities.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Sackey explained, “Even if Andre Ayew was going to play, he should come on in the second half.” While recognizing the risk in Hughton’s decision to start Ayew, Sackey commented, “Chris Hughton has put himself on the line by starting Andre Ayew.”

The outcome of the match in Moroni saw Ghana lose 1-0, leaving them with three points after two games in the World Cup qualifiers.
