In 2010, under the guidance of Professor Martin Owusu at the University of Ghana, I embarked on a playwriting project. My goal was to weave a narrative that resonated with ancient Greek and classical mythologies, all set within the rich tapestry of authentic African context, culture, and traditions.
During this creative endeavor, a profound internal struggle arose as my grandfather battled prolonged illness. The conflict between staying by his side and acknowledging that his release from suffering lay in death became the catalyst for my play. This emotional journey ultimately resulted in an A+ grade.
Fast forward to last year, when I transformed the play into a novel titled “DEATH MUST DIE.” This fictional world, brimming with imaginative brilliance, has become a source of immense pride. The foreword by Mr. Joseph Martin Mould, Head of Languages Department at Ahantaman Girls’ SHS, Sekondi, gives a glimpse into the essence of the story, playfully referencing my moment of “swollen-headedness” upon reading the comparison to Chinua Achebe.
Mr. Mould wrote:
“The solution to seeing the death of Death lies only in the heads of Nda Se Yompo, the Supreme Being, since the battle between the Spirit of Life and the Spirit of Death has no end in sight. What is the declaration of Nda Se Yompo? What are the consequences of His declaration to the twin raging spirits and the people of Sowunya? The answer lies in the carefully woven suspense-filled pages of this masterpiece by Abeiku Okai, the next Chinua Achebe of African Literature.”
Stay tuned for the unveiling of this masterpiece!
