Chinese National Arrested in Kenya for Attempting to Smuggle Over 2,000 Queen Ants

Authorities in Nairobi have arrested a Chinese national accused of attempting to smuggle more than 2,000 live queen ants out of the country in what officials describe as a case of illegal wildlife trafficking.

The suspect was intercepted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after security officials discovered the insects hidden inside his luggage during routine checks.

Investigators said the ants were carefully packed in test tubes designed to keep them alive during transport, while several others were concealed inside rolls of tissue paper. Authorities recovered more than 2,000 queen ants from the luggage.

According to reports, queen ants are highly sought after in the global exotic pet market because a single queen can establish an entire colony in specially designed ant farms.

On the international market, queen ants can sell for between $20 and over $150 each, depending on the species and rarity. Based on those estimates, the seized shipment of more than 2,000 ants could have generated between $40,000 and $300,000 in potential resale value for smugglers.

Wildlife officials warned that the illegal trade in insects is an emerging threat to biodiversity. They noted that wildlife trafficking is not limited to large animals such as elephants or rhinos but also includes smaller species that are crucial to ecosystems.

Kenyan authorities say the suspect is currently under investigation and could face serious charges under the country’s wildlife protection laws.

The recovered ants have been handed over to experts for examination and care while investigations continue.
