Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has announced plans to initiate learning packages through the Judicial Training Institute, aimed at sharpening the skills and knowledge of court reporters.
Speaking during her first meeting with members of the Judicial Press Corps (JPC) in Accra on Tuesday, she stressed the importance of journalists comprehending the intricacies of the courts to improve their reportage.
Chief Justice Torkornoo emphasized the significance of accurate reporting, stating, “Learning and presenting legal issues would help journalists bring out accurate reports whilst demystifying issues around the judiciary.”
She urged journalists to seek a deeper understanding of the court system, its various levels, and the types of cases they handle.
During the swearing-in of new JPC members, the Chief Justice highlighted the responsibility of the media in promoting national cohesion through the dissemination of information from the law courts.
She encouraged journalists to ask questions and avoid presumptions, emphasizing the uniqueness of each legal case.
“Be persons of learning and try to understand what happens in court, and let’s be mindful of not misinforming the public of what happens in court,” she advised.
Chief Justice Torkornoo highlighted the diverse structures of the 430 courts nationwide, urging the media to grasp the nuances of each and report accurately.
Assuring the commitment of the Judiciary to support media efforts, she affirmed, “The Judiciary will do everything in its power to provide quality and timely information to enhance the work of the media.”
