Chief Justice nominee, Gertrude Torkonoo will easily be Approved by parliament – Lawyer

The President has nominated Supreme Court Justice Gertrude Torkonoo as the new Chief Justice to take over from Chief Justice Anim Yeboah as his retirement is due in May 2023 as enshrined in the 1992 constitution subject to parliamentary approval.

 

Lawyer Kweku Y Painstil, a constitutional lawyer Commenting on this development in an interview with Kwaku Mensah Abrampa on High Radio stated that though there is a close number of differences between the Minority and Majority of parliament, but that may have no impact on the approval of Mad Gertrude Torkonoo as Chief Justice indicating that her hard work, dedication to work and loyalty won her this nomination hence same attitude towards work will win her the parliamentary approval with ease for her to occupy the new position entrusted in her to serve in the apex court of Ghana.

 

He explained that the work of parliament concerning the approval of the Chief Justice should not be politicized because the Chief Justice after their nominations and parliamentary confirmation work independently without the interference of any authority.

 

Therefore, Lawyer Kweku Painstil believes the Chief Justice nominee will smoothly sail through the parliamentary approval to be the next female to hold that glorious position in the judicial service in Ghana

Lawyer Kweku Y Painstil denoted that the position of Chief Justice being entrusted to females for the third time indicates the educational improvement of females in the country which adds up to the fight against gender inequality as being discussed on several occasions.

 

He noted that women are being recognized recently on the education front due to the conscious effort made in the implementation of Girl Child Education some years ago which seeks to address the challenges of females in the education sector.

 

He emphasized that the appointment of Justice Gertrude Torkonoo implies how Ghana is tirelessly working to bridge the gap of Gender inequality to build the confidence of both genders in ensuring the development of the country.
