Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, has openly acknowledged that there is hardship in Ghana. However, he argues that the standard of living in Ghana, despite these challenges, is still better than that in the United Kingdom.

Chairman Wontumi pointed out that in the UK, people often struggle to save money as the majority of their income goes towards covering essential expenses. He illustrated this by noting that attendees at parties in the UK are expected to bring their own food and drinks, whereas in Ghana, it is common for party hosts to provide food for their guests.

“There is no denying that there is hardship in Ghana, but it is important to recognize that this hardship is a global phenomenon,” Chairman Wontumi stated. “We are working diligently to improve the lives of Ghanaians. When comparing the standard of living between Ghana and the UK, we find that Ghanaians are actually better off.”

He elaborated, “In the UK, if you earn 1,500 pounds a month but spend 800 pounds on rent and have additional bills, there is hardly anything left to save or to support your family. In contrast, in Ghana, even if there are challenges, people have access to more affordable necessities and do not face such extreme financial strain.”

Chairman Wontumi also urged journalists to convey the truth about global hardship to the Ghanaian public. “It is crucial for the media to provide an honest perspective on these issues, and those living abroad should also be transparent with their families about the global nature of these difficulties. The effects of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war have impacted every country, and it is important for everyone to understand this context,” he added during his media address.
