Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle, Liverpool, Brighton, Aston Villa and West Ham were all omitted from the opening two stages, but have now learnt who their first opponents will be in this season’s EFL Cup.
Some of the shock results from the second round included Tottenham being knocked on penalties by Fulham, with Leeds United also suffering the same fate courtesy of League Two side Salford City.
Premier League new boys Luton Town avoided a late Gillingham comeback while Crystal Palace also overcame a major scare as they came from two goals behind to beat Plymouth 4-2.
