James Agalga, the ranking member on Parliament’s Defense and Interior, has criticized Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong’s recent statement about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not taking power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement, Agalga claimed that Acheampong’s statement aligns with the NPP’s tendency to use violence to disrupt elections.

Agalga argued that Acheampong’s statement indicates two things: first, that the NPP is determined to subvert the will of the Ghanaian people to maintain power, even if they lose the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. Second, that the NPP is willing to use violence to disrupt the election if they believe they will lose.

Acheampong’s statement was in response to the possibility of the NDC using threats and brute force in the 2024 election. He stated that the NPP would demonstrate that they “have the men” and that the NDC would collapse.

Hon. Acheampong clarified that the NPP would stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC, but Agalga argued that Acheampong’s statement reflects Akufo-Addo’s government’s approach to the Electoral Commission’s impartiality and credibility in the lead-up to the 2024 election.

Agalga criticized Akufo-Addo’s recent appointment of Dr Peter Appiahene, Hajia Salina Ahmed Tijani, and Rev. Ofori Boateng, known NPP activists, to positions in the Electoral Commission, which he claims is consistent with Acheampong’s statement.

Mr Agalga stated that Acheampong’s conduct poses a direct threat to Ghana’s democracy and called for his arrest and prosecution for engaging in behaviour that could undermine the country’s peace and security.
