Brako-Powers, a prominent transport advocate and industry expert, has raised concerns over the government’s newly introduced batch of 29-seater buses. The government recently received the first set of 29-seater buses as part of efforts to address the ongoing public transport challenges in the country.

While acknowledging the government’s initiative, Brako-Powers has questioned the long-term impact and sustainability of the project. In an interview with the media, he emphasized that the introduction of these buses, though a step in the right direction, may not be sufficient to tackle the broader issues within the public transportation sector, such as overcrowding, maintenance, and insufficient coverage in rural areas.

“While we appreciate the gesture, the government must ensure that these buses are not just a temporary fix. The public transport system needs a comprehensive overhaul, with more focus on sustainability and efficiency. How will the government address the current infrastructural challenges and the high costs of maintaining these buses?” Brako-Powers queried.

The government’s plan to introduce 300 new buses is seen as an attempt to reduce the pressure on existing transport systems and provide a reliable alternative to commuters. However, critics, including Brako-Powers, suggest that without proper planning for routes, ticketing, and a maintenance system, the buses may not have the intended effect.

As the government rolls out this transport solution, Brako-Powers has called for a more holistic approach, which includes upgrading road infrastructure, improving the safety of public transport, and making these services accessible to underserved areas.

The issue of public transport continues to be a major topic of debate in Ghana, with citizens seeking solutions to the recurring challenges of overcrowding, high fare prices, and inadequate transportation options.
