Renowned media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah, has expressed her support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s approach to addressing illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.” In a social media post, Nana Aba praised the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, describing his proposal as the most practical solution to the problem so far.

She highlighted her relief that Dr. Bawumia had finally addressed the ongoing galamsey crisis, which has caused significant damage to Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves.

“I just listened to Dr. Bawumia’s remarks on galamsey. Glad he’s finally commented on the menace. His solution is the most practical one I’ve heard so far. I hope he walks the talk if he gets the mandate,” she shared.

The issue of illegal mining has sparked public outcry, with Ghanaians continuously protesting against the environmental destruction it causes. In response to mounting pressure, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has implemented various measures to combat the galamsey threat.

Bawumia’s Approach to Illegal Mining

During a recent engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders in Kpone-Katamanso, Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia outlined his plan to address illegal mining comprehensively. He emphasized that the small-scale mining sector requires a holistic review, including stricter enforcement of existing regulations.

As part of his strategy, Dr. Bawumia proposed supporting the Geological Survey Department to accurately map out all gold reserves in the country. By doing so, miners would be registered with their Ghana Cards and monitored to ensure environmentally responsible mining practices.

He explained, “Once they know where the gold is and they are all registered, you come with your Ghana Card, we register you, we monitor you, and provide you with user facilities. There is no need to destroy the environment.”

Dr. Bawumia also compared galamsey to corruption, noting that the focus has often been on solutions after the damage is done. He argued that the lack of alternatives has driven miners to continue illegal activities. His plan, therefore, aims to bring small-scale miners into the formal sector and direct them to designated areas for sustainable mining.

If implemented, Dr. Bawumia’s plan could mark a significant turning point in the fight against galamsey in Ghana.
