Political activist Dr Arthur Kennedy has expressed his distrust of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) leading investigations into reports on illegal mining in Ghana.

During an interview on the JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, April 24, Dr Kennedy argued that the CID is too beholden to the government to produce authentic results on the menace.

“I do not trust the CID to properly investigate this. I think that they are compromised and too beholden to the government,” he said.

Dr Kennedy called for a parliamentary hearing on how to legalize small-scale mining while ensuring that it is environmentally friendly and beneficial to the country.

He lamented the increasing issue of state capture, where wealthy political actors who contribute to the success of candidates seek to obtain benefits from the state.

“We are watching the unravelling of this fourth republic and the country,” he said, calling on all Ghanaians not to sit aloof while things are getting out of hand.

His comments follow the recent report by former Environment Minister Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, which implicated some top government officials in illegal mining.

The report has received criticism from some implicated individuals who have rejected the allegations, claiming that the facts have been misrepresented.
