In this article, we delve into Black Stars captain Andre Ayew’s recollection of Ghana’s historic win at the FIFA U20 World Cup 14 years ago in Egypt.
The Ghanaian team beat Brazil on penalties to lift the trophy for the first time in their history, making them the only African nation to achieve this feat.
Despite the disadvantage of playing most of the game with a man down after defender Daniel Addo was sent off in the 37th minute, Ghana held on to send the game into penalties, ultimately beating the favourites to secure their win.
According to Ayew, “Ghana has a special history with Brazil when it comes to youth football. Even before my time, meetings between the two teams were always tense. To be honest, we didn’t want to play the Seleçao in an earlier round as they were the best team in the tournament.” However, in the final, Ayew and his teammates were determined not to let the opportunity to make history pass them by. “We told ourselves that there were only 90 or 120 minutes separating us from a world title,” he added.
Ayew’s performance during the tournament earned him an immediate promotion to the senior team, where he played for the Black Stars at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
