The Amenfi Central District on Friday celebrated its hardworking farmers with a colourful Farmers’ Day event, honouring their resilience and the critical role they play in sustaining Ghana’s food systems. This year’s celebration also came with major government assurances aimed at transforming infrastructure and boosting agricultural productivity in the area.
In a message to farmers, local authorities praised the “gallant farmers of Amenfi Central and across Ghana,” stressing that their “daily sacrifice, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to agriculture are the backbone of our nation.”
Addressing the gathering, the Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central Hon Joana Gyan Cudjoe has announced that she had already presented a development needs list to the President — including communities without electricity, internet connectivity, schools, hospitals and CHPS compounds.
She stated that the President had “assured full support” for these critical interventions.
According to her, ensuring that every community has access to electricity and digital connectivity is central to improving education, healthcare and agro-based economic activity in the district.
The MP also highlighted major road projects currently underway.
• Bordie to Asankragua Road (50km): Work is ongoing, and for the first time in history, Amenfi Central is set to have a fully tarred road along this stretch.
• Asankragua to Bekwai Road (53km): Construction is also progressing steadily.
She noted that these improvements will drastically ease transportation challenges, reduce post-harvest losses and open up market access for food producers.
The MP further disclosed that she has identified several community challenges — including the need for boreholes and potable water systems — which are being followed up with relevant ministries.
Touching on national efforts, she emphasized that the NDC government has “within eight months shown strong commitment to transforming the country,” particularly through targeted agricultural and infrastructure projects.
She urged farmers to make themselves available for ongoing and upcoming government programmes, especially those in the agricultural value chain.
The District Chief Executive, Hon. Peter Amponsah, encouraged all farmers to register for the government’s “Akuko Nkitin Nkiti” initiative, which aims to expand poultry production and empower households through small livestock projects.
He revealed that the MP had previously facilitated NGO support for fish farming, and that the programme would soon be expanded to benefit more communities.
In his speech, the DCE acknowledged one of the biggest challenges confronting farmers are bad poor road infrastructure network in the district.
“These interventions aim to improve transportation, reduce post-harvest losses, and ensure farmers can move their produce to market centers with ease,” he said. “We will continue prioritizing road rehabilitation as a tool to enhance economic activity.”
Responding to concerns from residents of Kwuani over the delayed community center project, the MP assured that the necessary processes had been initiated for construction to commence shortly.
“By the grace of Allah, work will begin so the project can serve the community as originally intended,” she affirmed.
The climax of the celebration was the presentation of awards to outstanding farmers across various categories.
Anthony Boaky Saka from Amuni Sakakrom was adjudged Amenfi Central District Overall Best Farmer, earning praise for his innovation, productivity and commitment to modern agricultural practices.
In closing, leaders urged the entire district to continue supporting farmers, emphasizing that their work remains essential to national development, food security and economic resilience.
As the celebrations ended, one message resonated clearly across Amenfi Central:
a renewed commitment to empowering farmers, expanding infrastructure, and ensuring inclusive development for all communities.
