Launch of the 2024 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship Set for July 24 in Accra
The 2024 KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship will be officially launched in Accra on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. The event will take place at the Ghana Football Association’s Conference Room, starting at 11:00 AM.
During the launch, the organisers will brief the media on their plans and preparations for this year’s edition of the 12-day youth football tournament.
This will be the Fourth Edition of the KGL Foundation-sponsored Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship, following previous events held in Accra and Kumasi. This year, the competition will be hosted at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Introduced in 2021, the KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U17 Colts Championship has served as a significant platform for talent discovery among youth players, offering opportunities for them to be scouted by Premier and Division One League clubs. Over the past three years, the tournament has showcased emerging talents who have gone on to represent Ghana’s junior national teams and secure spots in domestic and international clubs.
The 2024 edition will see ten Regional Football Associations selecting the top U17 players from their respective Colts competitions to compete in the championship.
It is worth noting that in October 2021, the Ghana Football Association announced a landmark sponsorship deal with the KGL Foundation for the Colts (Juvenile) League, valued at One Million United States Dollars over a five-year period.
The inaugural 2021 edition and the 2022 championship were held in Accra, while the 2023 edition took place in Kumasi, in alignment with the GFA’s policy to rotate the championship across different regions for balanced representation.
The 2024 championship will see the tournament return to the capital city, with the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram set to host the fourth edition of this prestigious talent identification event.
In the previous editions:
– 2021: Mal FC won the title by defeating Greater Accra Champions Desidero FC.
– 2022: Great Corinthians emerged victorious by beating Tamale Republicans.
– 2023: Ashanti Region’s U-17 team won the title by overcoming Bono Ahafo Region on penalties in a thrilling finale held in Kumasi.
The KGL Foundation U17 Inter-Regional Championships have been instrumental in uncovering exceptional young talents, many of whom have progressed to represent Ghana at various junior levels and have signed with clubs both domestically and abroad.
