Today, October 01, 2023, marks the commencement of a new Church Year for the Methodist family in Ghana.
This follows the end of the 2022/2023 Church Year on Saturday, September 30, 2023.
The Methodist Church Year ushers in key activities within the Church including appointments to new positions, stationing of Ministers and Missionaries home and abroad, expiration of tenure of office of key officers of the Church at the Connexional, Diocesan, Circuit and Society levels as well as the superannuation of Ministers who have attained 70-years.
The just ended Church Year saw the end of the 3-year tenure of Bro William Orleans Oduro [Esq] as Lay President of the Church, paving way for Bro Kwasi Atta Antwi to assume office as the new Lay President from today.
Other key officers of the Church, including the Rt Rev Daniel Kwasi Tannor and the Rt Rev Samuel Mensah, brought their respective tenures of office as Methodist Bishops of Sunyani and Foso Dioceses to an end. The two have subsequently been replaced by the Rt Rev Kwaku Effah as Bishop of Sunyani Diocese and the Rt Rev Dr Supt Anthony Brown [Rtd] as Bishop of Foso Diocese effective today.
Over the last Church Year, 17 Methodist Ministers were called home to higher service, while 30 Ministers who have attained the age of 70 years were permitted to go on superannuation in line with S.O. 64:2 of the Methodist Constitution with three others beginning their superannuation on health grounds. 5 senior Ministers, including a past Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev Dr Robert Aboagye-Mensah reached a 50-year mark in the ordained ministry of the Church while 14 others attained 25 years in ministry.
Meanwhile, 67 new Ministers were received into Full Connexion with the Church within the period, while 83 Deacons were commissioned to begin a three-year probation as new Ministers.
The last Church Year also saw the Wesleyan family in Ghana reach some significant milestones including the completion, commissioning and dedication of the Wesley Towers to serve as the new Conference Office of the Church; election of the Presiding Bishop, the Most Rev Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo as President of the Africa Methodist Council, as well as attainment of significant strides towards the Church’s agenda for revival, transformation and growth.
The 2023/2024 Church Year will mark the last year of the Most Rev Dr Boafo as Presiding Bishop, making way for the election of his successor at the 13th Biennial & 51st Methodist Conference to be hosted by the Kumasi Diocese in August 2024. The Conference will also elect a new Administrative Bishop to replace the Rt Rev Michael Agyakwa Bossman, whose 6-year tenure of office also ends in this Church Year.
Some Dioceses of the Church, including the Accra Diocese and the Northern Accra Diocese, will also see the election of new Diocesan Bishops to replace the incumbents whose tenure of office ends in 2024.
The Church Year 2023/2024 will effective, January 01, 2024, adopt a new Church Theme, ‘Discipleship: Growing Into Christian Maturity’ with Ephesians 4:15 as its foundational scripture and Stanza 3 of Methodist Hymn 431 as the theme hymn of focus.
